Match Preview: Solihull Moors vs Port Vale

Solihull Moors Women are back on home turf for a second successive game with the welcoming of Port Vale Women to Mappableborough Green on Sunday, September 6 (ko 2pm).

Harry O’Neill’s side succumbed to defeat for the first time this campaign, with Moors losing 3-1 at home to Hednesford Town Women over the bank holiday weekend.

The visitors took an early lead when Marsha Malik perfectly cut inside the left before finding the top corner to break the deadlock. Gina Burton brought Solihull back level, before Janelle Straker’s delightful cross was finished off the back post from Millie Rogers, restoring her side’s lead at half time.

Hednesford kept pushing for more goals, and their pressure was rewarded thanks to Straker’s perfect finish that secured her brace and the three points for the Pitmen.

THE OPPOSITION:

The Valiants, who currently sit below their opponents heading into this weekend, have had a decent start to their 2026/27 campaign. A 1-1 draw at home to Hednesford was later followed by a 1-0 win against Knowle over the bank holiday weekend.

Manager Garry Pearce will feel encouraged by the four points from their first two games, as they look to build on their 6th-place finish, which coincidentally ended with a 2-0 victory over Moors on the final day of last season.

TEAM NEWS:

O’Neill will be looking to put the disappointment of defeat last weekend behind him and his players, and prepare for a reaction that will hope to showcase their ability to bounce back from losing matches. Gina Burton was outstanding once again,  with her header making it three towards her impressive goal tally – a real serious prospect for opponents to watch out for this season.

Likewise, Garry Pearce’s side have the attacking qualities from Ellie Edwards, who scored on her professional debut for Vale having been promoted from their U16 setup. Jess Smith, who won the Captain and Community Champion awards last season, is another prolific player to look out for, as well as the talented Eva Tankard in midfield who’ll be looking to follow in the footsteps of her father Allen.
