Match Preview: Moors vs Coventry Sphinx
Solihull Moors Women are at home for a second successive game with the visit of Coventry Sphinx Ladies to Mappableborough Green on Sunday, September 27 (ko 3pm).
Harry O’Neill’s side return to league action on the back of a fabulous 5-0 win over Stourbridge in the second round qualifying of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup. The Glassgirls started the first half brightly with a break down the left that went safely into the hands of Moors goalkeeper Erica Turner.
The deadlock broke in the 24th minute thanks to a perfect strike from Eloise Harris. Morgan Reeves then doubled the lead on the half hour mark, before substitute
Neve Critchley bagged two goals of her own on her Moors debut.
Captain Daina Scott added the icing on the cake with her name pencilled on the scoresheet, completing the perfect afternoon for Moors as they booked their place in the third round qualifying of the Women’s FA Cup, where they have been drawn to face Grimsby Town at home on Sunday, October 4th.
THE OPPOSITION:
Coventry Sphinx were also in action over the weekend against Lichfield City in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup – a contest between the bottom two sides of the West Midlands Regional League that ended up being quite a match to remember at Sphinx Drive. It was a dream start for the hosts as they were ahead in the first few minutes, but Lichfield equalised just before half time.
Two more goals in the second half for the visitors saw Sphinx on the verge of bowing out of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup. However, a late resurgence rescued them back into the competition with two late goals, completing a remarkable comeback and ensuring the tie went straight to penalties.
And it was Olly Cotterill’s side who came out on top, winning 3-1 in the penalty shootout to book their place in the third round qualifying – an unbelievable game which will be remembered for a long time.
TEAM NEWS:
Despite a rotated side from last Sunday, O’Neill will be thrilled with the dominant display from his players, and will hope it has built more confidence around the dressing room for his side’s return to league action. Neve Critchley’s brace was the perfect start to life at Solihull, and her manager will look to replicate this by handing more debuts to Jessica Edwards and Frankie Benjamin, who have both arrived from Shrewsbury Town.
Likewise, Sphinx boast the qualities of Casey McBride and captain Jodie McGuckin, who have displayed impressive performances in their first few league games despite their side currently rooted to the bottom of the table with zero points. Goalkeeper Jade Taylor is another serious prospect for Moors to look out for – she was recently awarded player of the match for her spectacular saves in their last league game, although her side would go on to lose 5-0 away at Shifnal Town.
