Foundation Volunteer of the Month: Graeme Longstaff

This month, we’re incredibly proud to shine the spotlight on someone who truly embodies the heart of our Ability Counts programme, Graeme Longstaff.

Graeme has been volunteering with Ability Counts for over five years, and his journey started in the most meaningful way: as a parent. When his son Ted, who has Cerebral Palsy, joined the Ability Counts team, Graeme was there on the sidelines cheering him on. It wasn’t long before he stepped in to help coach sessions, and from that moment, Ability Counts gained something very special.

When asked what motivates him to give his time, Graeme says:

“Ted was the kick-starter for sure, but what keeps me motivated is the kids. Seeing the difference it makes to them, their parents and their lives. It’s incredible.”

Over the years, Graeme has gone from parent volunteer to a key part of the coaching team, and more recently, an outstanding U12s coach. His sessions are full of energy, encouragement and positivity, creating a space where every child feels included, valued and confident to be themselves. With his background in working with children with SEN and disabilities, Graeme has a real understanding of each player’s individual needs, and the players absolutely adore him.

One of Graeme’s most meaningful moments doesn’t even happen on the pitch:

“After tournaments we all head for food. It might seem like a small thing, but it’s huge for the kids, all sitting together, having fun and being themselves. For some parents, it was the first time they’d seen their kids come out of their shells.”

That’s what Ability Counts is all about – belonging, confidence, and friendship

And if Graeme had to sum up his volunteering experience in one sentence?

“The best thing in the world.”

Graeme, thank you for everything you do; for your time, your passion, your kindness, and the difference you make week in, week out. The Solihull Moors Foundation is incredibly grateful to have you as part of our Ability Counts family. You are a true inspiration
