Breaking Barriers In The Community

Last night, Foundation staff had the pleasure of attending “Breaking Barriers in the Community”.

It was an inspiring event delivered in partnership with PGMOL (the body responsible for refereeing across the Premier League, EFL and WSL), the Aston Villa Foundation, and hosted by Birmingham Pragati Mandal, Shree Krishna Temple (BPM).

The evening brought together people from across the football community to explore pathways into officiating, grow networks, and hear first‑hand experiences from some of the most respected officials in the game.

We were privileged to hear from an exceptional guest panel:

  • Sian Massey‑Ellis MBE – a leading figure in officiating, with extensive experience across the Premier League and international games
  • Amy Fearn MBE – the first woman to referee in the Football League, now supporting the development of future officials
  • Matt Wilkes – assistant referee with experience at the highest levels of the game, including the FA Cup Final

Each shared powerful stories about starting their refereeing journeys at just 14, progressing through grassroots football, and overcoming challenges on the way to officiating on some of the biggest stages in world football. Their honesty, resilience, and lived experiences offered invaluable insight into what it truly means to break barriers in the professional game.

We were also given special access to the VAR experience, including the chance to make real‑time decisions and gain a deeper understanding of the role VAR plays in the modern game. PGMOL match officials guided participants through the process, offering expert insight into how decisions are made at the highest level.

The event was exceptionally well organised, with a real community feel throughout. BPM kindly provided delicious food during the break, creating space for conversation, connection, and reflection.

The evening closed with a fantastic Q&A session, where attendees asked thoughtful questions that were answered with openness and authenticity by the panel.

It was a pleasure for Solihull Moors Foundation to be part of such an important and inspiring event. One that celebrates diversity, representation, and the power of football to bring communities together.
