Making football accessible to everyone

At Solihull Moors Foundation, we believe football should be for everyone. Our Ability Counts programme provides children and adults with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) the opportunity to play, develop skills, and build friendships in a welcoming and supportive setting.

With over 80 participants, these sessions focus on inclusion, enjoyment, and personal growth. Led by experienced coaches, each session is tailored to meet the needs of SEND players, ensuring everyone, regardless of ability, can participate at their own pace and experience the joy of football.

’My son has been training with Solihull Moors ability counts adults’ team for 6 months. He loves football and was desperate to start playing again but couldn’t cope in a mainstream team. The club has a range of abilities and is very inclusive. The standard is good in my son’s team, and they play to a high, competitive level. He has been made to feel so welcome; coach Scott is fun, encouraging and gets involved. Everyone is very accepting and friendly and there is just no pressure from his teammates which has been great for him. His fitness is improving and he’s making friends and his confidence is growing. Playing matches in a mini league once a month is great as it spreads it out and we don’t have the commitment of playing every weekend. I highly recommend the training and supportive club, we are so glad my son has joined and it's amazing to see him play with a smile on his face again. ‘’ Tiff (Parent)

’Since starting at Solihull Moors Foundation Ability Counts, Leo’s confidence has been boosted by the amazing staff and team. He struggles when it comes to going to unfamiliar groups or places and the foundation team made him feel so welcomed from day one. His confidence and self-esteem have always been knocked and thanks to everyone at Solihull moors foundation, he now really enjoys football. He’s made some great friends, and he only started in November 2024. His skills have developed so much since being here and he gets involved at training and tournaments. Everyone is so friendly and supportive and always cheering each other on which we feel plays a massive part within Leo’s mental health. We hope Leo continues to enjoy football and he has a real passion when it comes to this sport. It is like a second family who understand children with additional needs whether they are neurodivergent children or have physical disabilities, which is all we want for our son as we feel like sometimes his disability is overlooked. Thank you to the whole team.’’ Amanda (Parent)

’George has been training with Solihull Moors Foundation Ability Counts since the age of 16, he is now 21. This has been a huge part of his own development in playing football (a sport he absolutely loves) Alongside gaining more confidence in himself and the ongoing support from the team but Scott has been key to this, and his commitment is outstanding. George has grown with his peers, developing his ability to play football with other young adult peers. He looks forward to training every Saturday during the season and playing competitive games once a month too. If Ability Counts was not available, George would not of gained these invaluable skills and opportunities to play football on a regular basis.’’ Michelle (Parent)
